Overview

The May and Stanley Smith Trust was created in 1977 by May Smith, to provide grants to organizations that serve the needs of children, the elderly, the disabled, and the disadvantaged. The Trust makes grants to support projects in North America.

The Trust makes grants to organizations that are recognized as 501(c)(3) public charities by the United States Internal Revenue Service, and to non-U.S. organizations that can demonstrate that they would meet the requirements for such status. The grant award limit is $6,000. The Trust generally funds smaller nonprofit organizations, to which such an amount would make a significant difference. The Trust provides support in the following areas:

  • General operating support
  • Capacity building
  • Program support
  • Equipment
  • Tuition assistance

The Trust does not make grants for the following purposes:

  • Hospitals or hospital foundations
  • Building funds or capital projects
  • Individuals
  • Organizations or programs operated by governments or receiving significant funding from government sources
  • Film or art projects

Areas of Interest

In 2008, the Trust paid out grants totaling over $410,000, which were distributed as shown among the following program areas:

  • Arts & Culture — 7%
  • Children & Youth — 9%
  • Education — 15%
  • Health — 3%
  • Human Services — 66%

Application Procedures

The Trust has no proposal submission deadline, and proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. It is recommended that requests for summer programs be submitted between November 30 and March 1. Applicants are notified promptly when their proposals are received but should expect to wait three to six months for notification of the Trustees' decision.

Please carefully review the complete Application Guidelines and Grant Proposal Cover Sheet before submitting a proposal. Typically, the Trust prefers to receive a full proposal rather than a letter of interest. Staff is available to speak with prospective applicants by phone or e-mail to help ascertain whether or not submitting a proposal is appropriate. Questions may be sent to the Grants Manager at aatkinson@adminitrustllc.com. The mailing address for applications is:

The May and Stanley Smith Trust has been recognized by the IRS as a private foundation, exempt from income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Trust's IRS Form 990-PF can be viewed on Guidestar's Web site.
