May and Stanley Smith TrustOverviewThe May and Stanley Smith Trust was created in 1977 by May Smith, to provide grants to organizations that serve the needs of children, the elderly, the disabled, and the disadvantaged. The Trust makes grants to support projects in North America. The Trust makes grants to organizations that are recognized as 501(c)(3) public charities by the United States Internal Revenue Service, and to non-U.S. organizations that can demonstrate that they would meet the requirements for such status. The grant award limit is $6,000. The Trust generally funds smaller nonprofit organizations, to which such an amount would make a significant difference. Application ProceduresThe Trust has no proposal submission deadline, and proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. Applicants are notified promptly when their proposals are received but should expect to wait three to six months for notification of the Trustees' decision. There is no standard report form. However, narrative and financial descriptions of how grant funds were spent should be submitted and should incorporate information outlined in the Guidelines for Grant Reporting. Foundation StatusThe May and Stanley Smith Trust has been recognized by the IRS as a private foundation, exempt from income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
