Ruth M. Collins

Ruth Collins is a Trustee of the May and Stanley Smith Charitable Trust, and its Administrator. Ruth has worked with the Trust since its founding in 1989, having experienced all aspects of its operations, as well as with three other trusts established by the Smiths. Her company, AdminiTrust LLC, provides administrative services to the Trust and other private and charitable entities. Ms. Collins is a trustee of the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust and serves on the Alumni Council for San Domenico School. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from Santa Clara University and a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Administration from the University of San Francisco.

Frank A. Lalle
Director of Programs

Frank Lalle joined the Trust as the Director of Programs in 2013. Frank’s philanthropic experience includes service as a Program Director and Director of Programs at the California Wellness Foundation, as a Program Officer and Senior Program Officer at Peninsula Community Foundation, and as a Grantmaking Director at Silicon Valley Community Foundation. Before entering philanthropy, Frank practiced law at the nonprofit Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County, representing low-income older adults and people with disabilities. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Beloit College and a J.D. from Northwestern University. Frank currently serves as a trustee of the Bernard A. Newcomb Foundation.

Dan Gaff
Grants Manager

Dan Gaff is the Trust’s Grants Manager. Before joining the Trust in 2014, Dan had eight years of experience in domestic and international philanthropy and grantmaking, most recently as a Senior Program Manager at the American Himalayan Foundation. He is active in the Northern California chapter of PEAK Grantmaking (formerly the Grants Managers Network), where he currently serves as Vice Chair.  Dan received a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the College of William and Mary, and a Master’s degree in Music History from the University of Virginia.

Elisabeth Cutler
Program Officer – Foster Youth

Elisabeth Cutler is the Program Officer for the Trust’s Foster Youth program area. Elisabeth joined the Trust in 2013, and she brings more than fifteen years of experience in research and evaluation in K-16 education. Prior to joining the Trust, Elisabeth was a Senior Analyst for Research and Policy at Breakthrough Collaborative, where her research and writing focused on policies and practices to increase educational opportunities for underserved students. Elisabeth received a Bachelor’s degree in American Studies from Barnard College and a Master’s degree in Public Affairs from Brown University. She represents the Trust with the Youth Transitions Funders Group and the California College Pathways Funder Alliance.

Bill Lockwood
Program Officer – Veterans

Bill Lockwood is the Program Officer for the Trust’s Veterans and Military Families grantmaking. Prior to joining the Trust in 2014, he served as the Director of the Wounded Warrior Careers program with the National Organization on Disability, supporting veterans with serious disabilities in their transition to education and careers following military service. Bill retired from the U.S. Army in 1996 as a Lieutenant Colonel and began a career in Human Resources and Career Development. He received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota, and a Master’s in History from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Laura E. Mason
Program Officer – Elders

Laura Mason is the Program Officer for the Trust’s Elders grantmaking. Before joining the Trust in 2013, Laura was a Senior Program Officer at the Jewish Community Federation & Endowment Fund in San Francisco, where she developed strategy and grantmaking portfolios in the areas of aging, health, and social services. After receiving a Bachelor’s degree from San Francisco State University, Laura earned a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Administration from the University of San Francisco and completed a thesis on alternative transportation models for older adults.  Laura currently serves on the board of directors of the Eva Gunther Foundation and Menorah Park, and as Board President of Art with Elders.

Lisa L. Trygg
Program Officer – People with Disabilities

Lisa Trygg is the Program Officer for the Trust’s grantmaking in the program area of Youth and Adults with Disabilities. Before she joined the Trust in 2009, Lisa had more than 20 years of experience in corporate and private philanthropy, with an emphasis on people with disabilities. In addition to this professional experience, she has been involved with people with disabilities in her personal life through volunteer activities, most notably as a lead parent counselor for the Children’s Tumor Foundation, and as a fundraising volunteer for several community nonprofit service providers. Lisa received a Master’s degree from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
